Book Cover[/caption]“GOD SEES THE TRUTH BUT WAITS” is a beautiful short story. It is written by leo Tolstoy (1828-1910) . He was great writer of Russia . he wrote many good novels and short stories. “war and peace” is one of his famous novels. His writings shows love , compassion and forgiveness . he is opposed to war.
There are 2 characters in this story : one is good and another is evil. The good character is evan aksimov and the evil one is makar semenich. Both of them were born in Vladimir. vladimir was a town in Russia . In this story, Ivan suffers because of makar . Ivan has to spend 26 years in prison . makar murdered and rubbed the marchant . For makar’s crime evan Was punished . Physically ivan had to suffer . But at last makar confessed his crime .He asked forgiveness for his sin with ivan, ivan was at rest at the end . He died in mental peace . But makar suffered with remorse and mental torture.
The story goes like this :
There was a young merchant . His name was Ivan aksenov . He lived in the town of Vladimir . He was happily married and have two lovely sons. He had two shops and house . He Was full of fun . He liked to sing songs also .
One summer He Went to nizhny fair. He went there with some goods to sell. But his wife had seen a strange dream.. she had dreamed that when coming back home from town he had grown old and full of gray hair. so she asked him not to go that day. He laughed at her fear. He said that her dream was not bad but good. He would sell all his goods in the fair. He would return home with rich presents for her.
Along the way aksemov meet another merchant . They knew each other . They traveled together . At night they took rest at the same inn. They slept in their own rooms . The next morning ivan got up early . He thought another merchant was still asleep . He didn't want to disturb him . So he paid for his own room and started on his journey . He covered about 25 miles . He thought his horse were tired .
Water was being heated for tea and horses were being feed . He took out his guitar and began to play on it .
While he was resting in this manner , a carriage stopped before him . It was a carriage drawn by 3 horses . An official and two soldiers came up to him, the official was the police officer. He began to ask all sort of questions . The soldiers searched his belongings . The found a blood-stained knife in ivan's bag.
Ivan was told that the merchant was with him the previous day was killed . His throat was cut at night . The police officer accused ivan . He said that ivan must have murdered him and left the place early in the morning . The proof was that the blood stained knife was in his bag . If he didn't kill the man , who did?
Ivan aksemov was arrested , tied up and thrown into the cart . He was taken to the jail in the nearest town . He was convicted to murdering the merchant . He was also accused of robbing marchant's twenty-thousand roubles. Ivan denied the crime strongly . He was whipped . He was thrashed.
His wife came to see him . She came with her sons. She had to try hard to see him . She saw him with criminals and in prison clothes . It was unbearable to her . He asked her to petition the tsar that her innocent husband was wrongly jailed for murder . She told him that she had already sent a petition but it was rejected . She came closer to him . She than asked his whether he had not really murdered the merchant . Ivan has said that even his wife suspected him . He cried . There was only god to know the truth . Only god believed him . Then his wife was taken away by the police . He had to bid goodbye with his wife and kids for forever.
Ivan was severely whipped . He was sent to work hard in mines . When his wounds are healed he was taken to siberia . Siberia is a very cold place . Criminals are sent there to do hard work and suffer .Ivan was taken there with other convicts . There he suffered for twenty-six years . He was never happy .There was no hope of returning home . There was no hope of seeing his wife and son again . He often prayed to god and sang a religious songs.
He learned how to make boot in the prison . He got some money by selling these boots . With that money he bought a book. The book was “ the life of saints” He spent his spare-time reading that book .
He become old before time . He stopped . His hair turned gray . His bread grew long . Everybody called him “grand'dad” or “saint” . He was kind . he was loved and liked by all fellow prisoners . They sought his advice . when there was any quarrel , they went to him to settle it .
One day a new batch of convicts was brought there . Old prisoners surrounded the newcomers . They asked them for what crimes they were brought to siberia. They asked them where they came from . There was a man named makar . He was 60 years old , tall and strong . He came from vladimir . He was proud . He boasted that he could easily escape by murdering a man . The police couldn't catch him . Instead of him an innocent fellow was punished . But when he stole only a horse , he was arrested and brought to siberia . Ivan knew that makar was the man responsible for his ruin . He was angry . He wanted to revenge . He stopped speaking to makar . For a fortnight he suffered privately . One night ivan was moving around inside the prison . He found out that makar was digging the floor . He was making the tunnel to escape . Makar threatened ivan . Makar warned that he would kill ivan if he told the authority about the tunnel . But if he didn't tell , makar would let him escape too .
Ivan replied that he didn't want to escape . Why sould he escape ? Where was he to go ? Through makar he had know that his wife was already dead and his sons had become rich .
The next day the tunnel was discovered . Nobody reported who dug it . They knew that the guards would whip makar almost to death . The jailer knew ivan spoke the truth . So he asked ivan about the tunnel . Ivan remained silent for sometime . But he sait god didn't want him to tell . The jailer could do anything he liked with him . The case was dismissed . But makar was full of remorse . He was greatly surprised . He couldn't understand why ivan didn't revenge on him . That night makar went to ivan and asked for forgiveness. He knelt before him and confessed his crime . He said he had killed The merchant . He wanted to kill ivan and loot him also . But somebody made a noise outside . So he hid the knife into ivan's bag and escaped through the window . Now he was very sorry . He repented . He cried . Ivan replied that he could not forgive anybody . It was not in his power to do so . Only god could forgive someone . Ivan thought that he himself could be much more guilty than makar .
makar said that he would confess the crime and petition accordingly . Ivan then would be free . But ivan said he didn't want to go out . He was now happy . Peace had come to his mind .
Makar confessed his crime . He wrote to the authorities . But when the order for ivan's release came , he was dead and gone already .
